Finished the OXFAM Trailwalker

Well we did it! The three Ultimate Walking Warriors teams (ICHI, NI, and SUN) completed the 2009 Melbourne OXFAM Trailwalker in about 35 hours. There were a few injuries, a lot of blisters and muscular aches, some tears, a lot of smiles and a sense of achievement.

Climbing the mountain

We’d been advised by OXFAM, rightly, to steer clear of the areas where the bushfires had been or were threatening. This was in the interest of walker safety and out of consideration for those directly affected by the fires. Again, rightly so. But this put the kybosh on our planned walk from Woori Yallock (CP7) to CP8 and then over Mt Littlejoe and back. We changed our plans to do the Mt Dandenong fire trail a couple of times instead.

First training walk – we’re on the way

Yesterday was our first training walk. We walked about 19klms over part of the trail (Checkpoint 1 at Churchill National Park to Checkpoint 2 at Lysterfield Lake and back again). We started at about 8:30 in the morning and finished about lunch time. It started out cool but warmed up. Of our 12 team members and 1 support crew we started with five walkers and our support person Rod. There are some challenging hills in this part of the walk and it was a good chance to asses early fitness.

New year, time to start planning for…

Well it’s Jan 1, 2009. Time to start planning for the two big personal goals for the year; completing the OXFAM Trailwalk with the teams from Ultimate and passing my Black Belt Grading in June.
